Top 5 Reasons Twitter Still Has the Most Loyal Audience on the Social Web

So much has been said about the three leading social platforms, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. The truth is each has its own advantages that make it unique and valuable to both consumers and marketers. Having said that, at the end of the day, there is only so much time in the day and in that time, there are all those mundane tasks we all need to do, like sleep, eat and others. We only have a very limited time frame that we can spend on the social web. So which one should capture your attention, assuming you only have time for one?

The truth is, if you can somehow manage to engage on all three platforms, that is the ideal solution, but most people are not master multitaskers so that is not a viable option. In my opinion, while Google+ does have some great benefits, primarily as the new kid on the block, and Facebook has, well everyone, Twitter is my platform of choice. Why? Good question, thought you’d never ask. Here is why:

5 And Finally, Let’s Not Forget the Speed

Maybe it’s me and my self-diagnosed ADHD, but I really have zero patience nowadays. I want my content served to me when I want it and how I want it. Facebook just doesn’t do it for me when it comes to reading content. Google+ is a lot better but the whole lack of auto refresh, plus inline pictures and video, make it less relevant when I want to read fast. Twitter is a real time streaming feed of awesomeness and I think its speed is something others have tried to imitate but so far, no one has come even close. So there’s that.

4 Let’s Talk About Culture!

At the end of the day, it’s not about who has more people on the platform or which one has more features; it is about the culture of the people using the platform. When it comes to the culture on Twitter, nothing compares. Now this isn’t something that other platforms can not improve upon, but I find, at least in my circles, Facebook is a lot of kid and cat pictures, with the occasional complaining about Facebook. Google+ is a whole lot of die-hard Google fans/Apple haters with the occasional complaining about… Facebook. Twitter? A lot of nice people who are willing to help each other out, plus a constant stream of great content. Let’s put it this way. When I have some down time and I want to read or talk to great folks, Twitter is where I go. Every time.

3 It’s All About Mobile

This one is a sensitive point because Twitter has not been treating its developers too well lately, but the fact remains, out of the three social options, Twitter has the best 3rd party ecosystem, especially on mobile. Whether you are consuming content or producing it, Google+ is fine but there is no full API yet, which means no apps, and Facebook’s app? Well, I am not even going to go there. Twitter, on the other hand, has apps like Tweetbot and tens of others that provide a superior mobile experience, which is becoming increasingly important in today’s world. So Twitter wins there, too.

2 Bells and Whistles Are So 2012

Seriously, I believe Leonardo de Vinci said it best, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” This is true for mobile apps and it is true for social platforms. There is something to be said for short form, easy-to-consume and simple-to-distribute content on the web. That is why Twitter does so well and that is why Vine will do so well. People like simple, people like short. You know how you feel when you get that mile long email trying to say something very simple and straight forward… Twitter is the antithesis of that and that is why people love it.

1 We Are Talking About Social, So Look at the People

While it is true that everyone is on Facebook, when it comes to connecting with the most interesting folks who are not in your immediate circles, Twitter is the best. The very nature of Twitter facilitates connections in the most natural way. Sending someone a Facebook friend request when you don’t really know them, well, that can get awkward. Yes, you can add them to your Google+ circles, but does that really mean you have connected? Twitter remains the best tool for finding and connecting with awesome people. Period.
